WHAT WE DO
"It would probably take 3 or 4 people to replace Alex Slato. That's because he is accomplished in so many areas of the art world that are usually separate specialties. [He is] An anchor of the art world."
- Opulence Magazine
Alex’s curatorial mastery is deeply rooted in his love for the artist. He sees beyond the work itself and delves in to the maker- who they are, when, where, and under what circumstances they are creating, and how that artist is augmenting the world in which we live. Nowhere was that more clear than during his time in Southern California where he served as the Vice President of the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) and simultaneously as the Executive Director of LA Art Core. MOLAA’s collection boasts over 1,500 pieces and is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art. LA Art Core fosters the expanding interactions between artists and audience and with 24 shows per year, provides a platform to enhance the exchange of information, ideas and feelings. In both of these institutions, Alex availed himself as one of the foremost leaders in magnifying this country’s exposure to the abundance of excellence coming out of Latin America and was recognized on Guggenheim.org for his work in doing so. Most recently, Alex has been working with the Rozas-Botran Foundation, the Puerto Rico Museum of Art, and as the Associate Director of The Fundación Alejandro Otero-Mercedes Pardo.
As a member of the National Auctioneer Association as well as the Auctioneer Associations of both Florida and California, Alex delights in bringing a sense of showmanship to the events he presides over, adding levity with an appropriate use of humor and inspiring awe as he seamlessly switches between Spanish and English. It is no wonder the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico named him as their official auctioneer! In recent years, Alex has remained the go-to-guy by several important institutions including MOLAA, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), and the Cathedral Metropolitana Basílica de San Juan Bautista.
With 30 years of experience and a trenchant eye for quality, Alex’s services in art appraisal are unparalleled. He has worked with both private and institutional collections of all shapes and sizes and looks forward to every opportunity to slip in to the white gloves. Currently, he is working on the appraisal of a private collection of over 400 pieces. Alex trained with and is a member of the International Society of Appraisers.
